نبذة تاريخية عن مأتم وحسينية أولادالحاج عباس عرفت البحرين المجالس الحسينية منذ السنين الأولى لاستشهاد الإمام الحسين وكان أهلها يقيمون مجالس العزاء في بيوتهم ومجالسهم الخاصة أو في بساتينهم ومساجدهم وكلما شهد الأهالي انفراج أمني من السلطة توسعوا في إقامة المجالس علنًا وكلما شعروا بالتضييق والاضطهاد انكمشوا في إحياء الذكرى وإقامة المجالس سرًا. والحسينية كمؤسسة أهلية قائمة بذاتها كبناء له كيان مستقل لم يعرفه المجتمع البحريني إلا في العصر الحديث وربما منذ حوالي أربعمائة سنة وهنا يجدر التنويه بأن كلمة المأتم تعني التعزية أما المبنى المستقل الذي تقام فيه التعزية فالاسم الصحيح له هو حسينية. ولقد كانت قرية عالي مثلها مثل غيرها من القرى والمدن, كان أهلها يقيمون العزاء في بيوت العوائل الكبيرة والمجالس والبساتين, وأول بناء مستقل في عالي يطلق عليه أسم حسينية كانت حسينية أولاد الحاج عباس والتي قام ببنائها الحاج أحمد بن الحاج عباس العالي سنة 1326 هـ الموافق 1908م
